Let's Observe and Doodle Down
An Artist never stops observing. But how can artist stop observing? It's his only way to appreciate things around him and silently interpret on his Medium. Who is an artist? He is a creator and social commentator; creates things with materials around him and expresses his emotions, thoughts and philosophies to his community through his works. That's all visual arts is about. As an artist myself (a social scientist) I loved doodling-call it drawing. I remember I drew on every surface that came my way; surfaces such as my Daddy's living room walls, my mother’s teacher lessons notes, my school textbooks, Bibles, varranders etc;
I was unconsciously fond of doodling down images that depicted sportsmanship, school buildings, pupil parading on assembly grounds or students matching to their various classrooms. These collections was indeed an impressive Master pieces of a boy of about 12years old. Friends and classmates could buy a new D1 (drawing book) for me to replicate any of my master piece on their first page probably as “Tommy’s” (as affectionately called) autograph.
More than two decades have passed and gone, and weather I'm still in the business of drawings or doodling? isn't my stands here, rather about the lessons learnt back then, I had no formal education as an illustrator but I could draw very well to the admiration of my own folks. Today, I cast back and can reflect on one attribute that made it happen “Observation” and I say this with my big eyes wide-open.
Every artist is good at observations and presentations; that is, presenting exactly what they see around them through sketches, drawings, doodles paintings etc. This is true because, if I ever missed a detail of my subjects then; it’s could distort my figures, drawings, pictures or compositions and I believe it couldn’t have attracted the audience and praise I enjoyed then.....
This means that, "as people master to observe well, they turn to get things right"
So why is Africa not getting alot of the things right? I have been wondering why every news item isn’t right or Complete? talk shows isn’t right or Complete? media reportage isn’t right or Complete? governance isn’t right or Complete? negotiations isn’t right or Complete? And am beginning to conclude that our leaderships are not "Good at observing" for It's as if there’s always a big miss of a "critical detail" from every picture made from Africa perspective.
Well someone may contend "drawings or art is an innate skill"-True but we were thought in drawing class to scale (trace, dub, reproduce, copy, immetate) images "Only" when you cannot freely draw your subject or do not want to miss a detail, so I ask, is tracing too an inborn skill? No! It is not. It's can be acquired.
Politicians and Academicians respectively do not consider the artist as a brilliants fellow or an enviable scholarly discipline; and so doesn't even encourage consulting from, but of what brilliance could scholar be if he fails to interpret his own observations? An artist doodles down the most vital or "critical details", and adds up flesh later. Lets not make no mistake "What is the difference between Creative thinking and critical thinking" If the leaderships wants to get it right; they should begin to see gorvanance from the artist's spectacles; to observe things right and to doodle them down. And I mean what if they can't doodle? Such is life; an imperfect world makes impossibility possible and so? Things might not work "sometimes" but "not all the times" if tracing becomes difficult, we will erase and redraw again and again- till we get every detail right.
Only if we learn to Observe and doodle down right, There’s always going to be a miss of critical details from the primary source.
My childhood reflections that impacted my life today is “Obversation” and am certain there's going to be even lot more in the future to come.
Let’s try to get it right as if we are always tasked to observe, to observe critically in order that we can “doodle ” them down without a miss of a detail.
